2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude // Bike Review
I have an affinity for bikes that mount the shock low on the frame. I’m not sure how much dropping the center of gravity legitimately affects how a bike handles, but it sure is easy on the eyes. So, as you can imagine, I was immediately a fan when I saw the new Rocky Mountain Altitude frame redesign.
Of course, the Altitude’s voracious appetite for speed is more important than its good looks. I was impressed by how well the altitude climbed. Despite being burdened by thick Maxxis Double Down casing tires, CushCore tire inserts, and a front tire with Maxxis’ MaxxGrip compound, the Altitude scooted around efficiently. This left me wondering just how efficiently it would climb with a more tra...

For me, the timing of its arrival couldn’t have been better as sloppy Pacific Northwest trails started to dry up from a long winter. Butter smooth through chunk, almost a little too long, the long back end really does make you feel like you're riding off the front. The rattle-y dropper post I was told only happens with the Fox and Raceface (rebranded Fox) dropper by the RM rep at the demo, other than that dropper the bike is extremely quiet. Interesting but very noisy bike, it seems. It's a shame that they scrapped the excellent modular Altitude platform they already had with ride9, adjustable shock mount _and_ adjustable chainstays. It takes more watts on the fire road type climbs but single track tech it is amazing. very quite bike. Feels very stout and a bit heavy though. Would be great if you spend at least 50% of your time in the bike park. I grew up in Marin as a mountain biker and I can confirm that there really is hardly any singletrack there. The result was having to break the law to do what I love. As I would pass by hikers on trails I would be cussed at and threatened by hikers, even when I was just a kid. I ran from and lied to rangers to get myself out of tickets. A couple years ago I moved to Denver for college and I was struck by what I found here. To my disbelief I found downhill trails designated for mountain bikers. At first I would wince when passing by hikers, expecting the hate I was used to, but instead they would smile and even sometimes cheer me on! All trail users have their needs met here. It's beautiful. Why can't this be the same in Marin County? There's more bike shops in Marin County than legal singletrack mountain bike trails. Why won't MCOSD represent the needs of the people? Think of how much good legal bike trails would do for the community. Think of the avenues they would open. Outdoor activities for the youth, community building, ect... Hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians could learn to coexist with each other. But that hasn't happened because the MCOSD is deeply corrupt and selfishly takes the financial lobbying of the elderly, wealthy hikers and equestrians that do nothing but take from the community. Enough is enough. It is time for this to change. Andrew Vernon, thank you for all you have done for our community. Thank you for advocating for us all these years. These dirty politicians can't hold us down forever.
